It’s Sunday, so that means we do our Tacoma Rainiers Week In Review – even if it is a night game. The game starts at 4:05 Pacific, which is 6:05 locally here in Sugar Land where it is too hot to play day games this time of year.
We started things off with a preview of the Sugar Land series, as the Rainiers opened just their second-ever series at the PCL’s newest franchise.
Then we reviewed the opening game of the series, which was a rare scoreless tie after nine innings.
And of course the next day we had an offensive eruption.
The Rainiers had one of their most satisfying wins of the season in the third game of the series.
The appearance of Houston Astros starter Jake Odorizzi on a rehabilitation assignment made it very clear how the new pace of play rules have improved the game.
Tacoma returns home after tonight’s game and will open a six-game series against the Salt Lake Bees on Tuesday at Cheney Stadium. Our next post will come prior to that on Tuesday afternoon.
YESTERDAY: Sugar Land made it two straight wins over the Rainiers with a 9-8 victory last night, and the Space Cowboys leads the six-game series 3-2. Tacoma was down 9-4 going to the ninth, and the comeback effort came up just short. Jarred Kelenic was 3-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI. Erick Mejia had three hits including a home run, and he drove in a pair.
TODAY: Tacoma Rainiers (28-42) at Sugar Land Space Cowboys (31-40), 4:05 (Pacific).
OPPONENT AFFILIATION: Houston Astros.
OPPOSING MANAGER: Mickey Storey.
SEASON SERIES: Sugar Land leads, 8-3.
PITCHERS: RHP Darren McCaughan (5-4, 5.15) at RHP Chad Donato (3-4, 5.09)
ROSTER MOVES: Yesterday the Mariners called up infielder Drew Ellis, to replace the injured Ty France. Pitchers Colby Morris and Gabriel Sosa were transferred back to the Arizona Complex League. Seattle has acquired outfielder Trey Amburgey from the Reds organization, where he was playing for Triple-A Louisville, and he is expected to join Tacoma on Tuesday.
HOT HITTERS: Forrest Wall has reached base safely in 11 straight games, and he has a .409 on-base percentage so far this month… Sam Haggerty has reached base safely in his last 19 PCL games… Marcus Wilson had his streak of reaching base safely end at 14 straight games… Jarred Kelenic has a four-game hitting streak.
OPPONENT NEWS: Sugar Land had a seven-game winning streak end last Saturday in Round Rock, and has gone 3-4 since then… Corey Julks has a 13-game hitting streak, getting exactly one hit in each game. Does that qualify as a hot hitter? He’s 13-for-52 (.250 average) during the streak… the Space Cowboys have received a big lift from infielder Enmanuel Valdez, who was called up from Double-A (where he was batting .357) on June 7. He homered twice in his Triple-A debut and added a three-homer game last week at Round Rock… Kent native and Gonzaga product Taylor Jones is currently with Sugar Land.
