Tacoma Defiance, Tacoma Rainiers

R Staff Picks: Movies

We have been given the gift of time. It’s tough not being with our greater Tacoma family right now but in a period of uncertainty, we know one thing – all of this will make being at Cheney Stadium that much sweeter when the time comes. Until then, you, your family, and those you’ve chosen to hole up with all get to spend more time together. It’s a gift, if we make it one.

Our We R Tacoma team are working from home to make sure whenever we open the R House gates, we’ll be ready to make it the best season of Tacoma sports ever. That being said, we’ve got more downtime than we’d prefer, and like many of you, we’re over here wondering “what now?”

Today, we’re sharing the movies that are keeping us entertained through it all. In a time that is uncertain and unprecedented, a distraction is always welcome.

Always together, We R Tacoma.

Movies

Casey Catherwood, Creative Director: I watched Uncut Gems (the latest Safdie Brothers film starring Adam Sandler as a deranged jeweler/criminal) and while it was one of the most compelling movies that’s come out in the last year, it might be a little stressful for the mood we’re trying to set. For the introspective but enjoyable vibe I think many of us are chasing, I would recommend our fans check out two movies. Both with the name Frank in the title.

First, check out 2014’s black comedy film Frank. It’s the story of a wannabe songwriter who finds his way (kind of) by falling in with an avant garde band of musician misfits led by a savant in a papier-mâché head. He’s sad, bemusing, and played by Michael Fassbender.

After that emotional epic, gather the whole family for a viewing of Robot & Frank. Dig in for a heart-warming story about a senile cat burglar who trains a robot to help him break into houses. The story evolves into an introspective delve into a lot of humanity. It’s the best.

Anthony Phinney, Technical Director: My favorites are comedies and sports movies. I find myself watching old Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler flicks. Sometimes you just need a good laugh and for me, those actors’ movies do the trick. I also really enjoy classics like Remember the Titans, Major League, and Draft Day.

I’ve always loved video production, so I focus on the camera shots, color correction, sound effects, CGI, and transitions.

Yvette Yzaguirre, Director of Partner Services: A movie I’d recommend is Instant Family featuring Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg as a couple who find themselves becoming foster parents of three distinctly different children. Through it all, they have the best of intentions, and while they have little idea what they’re getting themselves into, all they want is to share all of the love they have to give. I laughed, I cried, and overall left feeling happy and hopeful that love prevails all.

In our current world, this movie is a feel-good reminder of how meaningful family is and how important it is to take care of everyone around us. Regardless of bloodline. There is plenty of love in the world to give and receive and all we have to do is share it.

We want to hear from you. What movies are you watching while you have more time with your loved ones?

Tomorrow, we’re giving you R Staff Picks for the best TV shows to binge the day away.
